God. Damn. It.
Mar. 14th, 2022 07:58 pmSo, not long after recommending Buzzly and getting settled in and all that...they posted a poll that sounds very much like they want to reverse certain content bans that were put in place to keep the community safe. It's all worded in an extremely misleading, passive-aggressive, black-and-white manner, and they invoke "fiction is not reality" (once-good advice that has been warped into a dogwhistle for terrible things) on a dangerous fetish. People are rightfully pissed and bailing out en masse, and I'm despairing over how every glimmer of hope I have keeps shitting the bed.
This is bad enough that I'm seriously considering giving tumblr another shot. You know how badly you have to fuck up for that to happen? (Though I'm not looking forward to cross-posting a year's worth of art, AGAIN.)
ETA: Some more info has come to light.
The poll was written by ChStark and PokeMutt aka RedArcanine, Buzzly's two devs, as an unbelievably petulant response to having to ban zoophilia from the site. There were only minimum content standards on Buzzly at all because its staff did some serious arm-twisting to make it happen.
(Though I've heard that the staff aren't entirely innocent, either: treating users poorly and not doing anything else to corral the devs, especially not RedArcanine.)
Of course, there's a few assholes on Buzzly wagging their fingers at everyone else about how "it's just FICK-SHUN-UUUUUUHHHHL!" Which brings me to something that I cannot phrase delicately or nicely: there's evidence that RedArcanine is a pro-shipper, and this behaviour, along with that of everyone defending them, is unfortunately par for the course for the pro-shipper community these days.
Patterns of behaviour (just ask PurpleKecleon's victims), red flags, the lived experiences of survivors, even just the observations of people on the sidelines whenever a big-name creator turns out to be a predator--none of these things exist where it inconveniences their *~pwecious pwoblematic ficcus~* (or *~pwecious pwoblematic feral porns~*, as the case may be), and if you try and hold them to ANY sort of content standard, they'll scream and cry and piss on your carpet. Anyone who doesn't want to rely on dodgy tag filtering, knowing that they're still surrounded by triggering material being treated as exotic kinks, will just have to eat shit.
Turns out that basing your platform on doing whatever the hell you want and putting the onus of avoiding it (and blame for when things go wrong) on everyone else will attract the worst kinds of people. I saw it on tumblr with pedophiles joining the community because pro-shippers fervently defended and sheltered them in the name of creative freedom, and now it's happening again on Buzzly with dog-fuckers. Someone on twitter (that I swiftly blocked) was salivating over the possibility of Buzzly reversing its zoophilia ban; if the devs have their way, especially with staff wanting to quit if they don't stand down, we're gonna see even more of that.
To anyone who calls themself a pro-shipper but still has lines they won't cross, I am begging you: GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN. It's not worth associating yourself with these scumbastards anymore, nor is this situation a binary choice between "enlightened incest connoisseur" or "shrieking puritan". Surely it's not "pro-anti" to point out that this community has become toxic as hell, however it started out?
Regarding "dA competitors" in general...I've had enough of my hopes being dashed. Though I mentioned tumblr up there, at this point I'd really like to just make my own damn site (once I've got enough material) and spare myself the disappointment.
