Can you guess why I'm here? Can you friggin' guess?

It's too early to say if this will be the new anchor of my online presence, though I can say this much: after years and years of lurking on LJ and DW and following, like, one FFA thread, it feels weird (albeit not in a negative way) to finally get an account here.

(Disclaimer: I will probably not participate in FFA often.)

For all its faults, I really liked tumblr, the usefulness of its format, and its relatively non-insular nature (as opposed to forums and the king of insular hells, 4chumps); I made several friends there and shed a lot of high-school-era toxic mindsets by listening to other folks. I don't want to abandon that place entirely--a few of my friends are still staying there, after all--but the site's future is very much in doubt right now. I hate that it's come to this.

(In case anyone wants to bring up "THIS IS STRIKETHROUGH 2.0" here: one, I don't have the emotional energy to discuss that right now. Two, I despise pedoshit and firmly believe that the freedom of LGBT folks to write/talk about their lives and experiences should not be contingent on the toleration of pedophiles in their spaces. Sites like Pinterest have put hard bans on pedoshit and they haven't imploded yet; I think the real problem here is site-holders not respecting their user base enough to do it correctly.)

So...I'm RADIX. I'm very active in the Marathon fandom, so many of my fannish posts will be related to that and all the AU stuff I've made for it over the years. There will probably be many words on the latter in the near future, for the benefit of anyone who's meeting me here.

Welcome! :D

DW is privately owned and auto-sustained from paid accounts, so the main starter point of the various social armageddons simply isn't there.

FFA and various anon memes are what they are... sadly. Greater Internet F[*beep*] Theory and all that. I might be wrong on this but my impression is a great chunk of DW userbase are roleplayers, a lot are/were fanfic writers (then migrated to AO3); anon-meme communities are the bad side of that. (Spoken from my own experience going back to the oooold newsgroup system aaaaargh I'm such an old fart)

I sometimes lurk here and there on FFA because I casually found the only Marathon posts here on DW, haha (I think I followed a link from a Marathon fan on tumblr? Anyway, probably from a link, no way I have the time or patience to comb through all that neverending chains of prattle-complain-prattle to find things I'm interested to read.)

I absolutely agree with you: zero tolerance for illegal stuff.

And as anyone already said, the nuke-from-orbit-approach is not the solution in this case. The key is "respecting their userbase", or, translating from marketing-to-standard-english, "being slightly more smart about keeping a lucrative userbase" which involves taking any step necessary to quash illegal stuff as early and as effectively as it is possible, and avoid taking the near totality of said userbase within the blast radius.

Newgroups are from the early times on Internet, there was advantages, and disadvantages.

One of these is the reason I use a nickname that's usually read as male by a certain fan category (manga/anime and the like). I chose this one at these times (then stuck because, why not?) Anyway, some old-timer might say old times were better *BWAAHAHAHA* what a sorry lie.

*ahem* pardon me, I'm still bitter.

Anyway, I'm not exactly surprised by the planning, after all they were acquired by Yahoo how many years ago? Three or four, something like that.

Another (rather conspiratorial, I admit, so take this as such) hypotesis of mine is Tumblr being used as a learning ground for the reporting bots, to refine them and then commerce these at various entities/social. After all the big-data scandals sprung around I won't be excessively surprised by something like this.

[edit] woops, reply fail ^^;

What you said, yes, and also this process described by Prokopetz on Tumblr: "I think the real problem here..."
[and ignoring the very real problem of illegal stuff until too late; and letting other kinds of nasty stuff -- hatemongers and that crap -- basically untouched. blargh]
