Self-indulgent crossover piffle
Sep. 27th, 2019 06:42 pmThought about writing this earlier as a "before bed" thing, but was too tired to properly organize the post. It's "self-indulgent" because the other half of this crossover idea is the Ruby-Spears Megaman cartoon, and that side of things is gonna take some explanation. XD;
Basic premise of RS-MM, which isn't drastically different from the Classic games at its core: Dr. Wily and his motley gang of robots (some stolen from ex-colleague Dr. Light) are out to take over the world, or at least New York, so Megaman, his creator, and his siblings set out to stop him. Meanwhile there's some questions about whether or not robots are truly sentient (personally, I think all evidence points towards "yes", even if Megaman himself insists that he's just a humble machine), and Megaman frequently clashes with his older brother and blood-knight snark master Protoman.
In my little AU continuation thing, Megaman pretends to switch sides for a bit as "Quint" so he can gather intel and try to destabilize Skull Castle. Eventually he's caught out, but Protoman aids his escape and, as Megaman had hoped for years, finally comes back home. (This is a reworking of a much angstier and infinitely dumber idea from high school.)

* For starters, just the fact that this is what robots can look like here would throw Vince and co. for a loop (in Inmortalitas, it's a major thematic point that androids are largely indistinguishable from humans). Furthermore, while most robots are armoured, Durandal's armour doesn't look anything like that, so he's stuck with casual clothes. (So is Cortana, but for a different reason) AND he has to get used to calling himself a "robot" rather than an "android", which is just a tad annoying as the term "robot" carries different connotations for him.
(Meanwhile, I bet the S'pht would be stoked to learn about a different form of mechanical life. There's just the sliiiight problem that they'd stick out be a country mile...)
* Megaman/Rock's a bit of a show-boater--he frequently makes puns at/banters with his opponents, for one--whereas Vince very much is not. In fact, he has a very low tolerance for that kind of behaviour in combat, and would remind Rock at least once that, were he to pull this over in Inm.-land, he'd get sniped in five seconds flat. Their working relationship is a bit strained at first, at that's before delving into the main contrast between them:
Rock willingly had himself weaponized, while Vince was forcibly converted. I initially wondered if Vince might feel somewhat resentful over Rock getting to make that choice, until I remembered that he's not bitter about third-gen battleroids, so I guess the actual point of contention would be Rock assuming that Vince's battleroid conversion was consensual. If Rock ever got annoyed enough to bring that up in an argument, well.
* On the lighter side of things: Rush is a simple dog who likes trashing Wily-bots and being petted. Vince likes dogs (though he really likes horses, and Dr. Light hasn't built any of those yet).
* If Tycho somehow gets involved in this, I could see him and Proto sizing each other up for a couple of encounters before going in for the brawl. Whatever unfortunate building they were in is thoroughly trashed and the battle ends in a draw.
* Roll's a heavy metal fan, which aligns with Durandal's implied musical interests. I'll bet he'd also be very intrigued by her gadget arm (and the fact that she modded in most of its functions herself); maybe later he grumbles to Vince about how Inm. androids were robbed.
* Durandal would have some Feelings(TM) about Dr. Light, I bet--dude's the total opposite of Strauss with the occasional bout of scatterbrain-ness. Probably wouldn't take long for Durandal to spill his heart out to Dr. Light about how horrible a creator Strauss was...
* By contrast, Durandal has less than zero respect for Wily. Not even in the "you're as awful as my creator" sense--only Lisa Carroway holds that dishonour. Wily's a card-carrying villain who somehow hasn't conquered diddly-squat even after constructing a device that could screw with lunar orbit and induce devastating earthquakes. Durandal's seen low-ranking Empire mooks who achieved more than that.
After MIDA, Vince is just glad that Wily can't seem to cause that much lasting damage despite his ambitions.
* Of course, after noticing that Dr. Light suddenly has a trio of very smart allies, one of whom is a human who can handle Gutsman in a fight, Wily decides he'd rather have at least one of them on HIS side. He abducts Durandal and sets about trying to reprogram him, only to swiftly run into the hurdle of "none of the computers in Skull Castle can interface with Durandal's architecture, plus Inm. androids can't be 'reprogrammed' anyway". So Wily switches tactics to good old-fashioned coercion.
The end result: Durandal still doesn't do as Wily commands, and Wily gets to deal with his hostage's pissed-off battleroid boyfriend.
* Durandal would be horrified by all the "I'm just doing what I was programmed to do" and general denial of robot sentience by society at large, but not know how to respond in a way that doesn't imply that he believes Vince's "AIs/androids are artificial humans" stance.
Further thoughts/suggestions welcome!

Date: 2019-09-29 02:43 am (UTC)Bonus idea! The robot dragon that Doctor Wily keeps in his castle? Have Vince convince it join their side when he's storming the castle to find Durandal! (I loved that dragon boss when I was little. ^_^)
