Wait, what's going on at LiveJourn--oh.
Dec. 9th, 2018 07:20 pmI only just now heard that LJ didn't start emptying out in earnest until last year and it had something to do with a TOS change (as it always does, it seems). So I looked it up and...gyeesh. On top of being extremely LGBT-phobic, because P*tin's Russia, it seems to have been designed to be as legally draconian as possible. And LJ is required to hand over your personal information if you step out of line.
Glad I never made an account there. Still, this makes me wonder--is there an "LJ-utils" program like for tumblr that'll allow people to back up journals that haven't been exported? Because if a lot of dusty old comms haven't been purged yet, I think it's only a matter of time.

Date: 2018-12-10 09:52 am (UTC)On backups: I think there are tools, but at the moment I don't recall them.
It's my intention to make a backup of mine too and then delete everything. (Now it's just hidden.) I imported all the LJ in Dreamwidth but I'd like to make some declutter, so as soon as I learn/remember something I'll share if you're interested.
I don't know if it's possible to make a backup of someone else's journal or a community without administrative access, all the tools I know of of have the login as a mandatory step (otherwise it would be crawling: an activity is looked upon from many providers for various reasons).
I saved the things I was interested in as PDFs, but I think it's a method suited only when the interesting pages are far in between.
