We've got leakage

Tonight I got out of bed (sleep schedule is still being fixed) to hear something dripping in the basement. Long story short, we've got two spots where it's leaking rain water: one on the landing, one on the steps. It seems that the only viable solution is for Dad to get on the roof, scrub the algae off the chimney and plug up the holes, but that's a fairly dangerous prospect at the moment. Plus, the river will probably flood and leave us stuck up here for a while (we're high up enough that we won't have to start bailing out our house...I hope).

Did I mention that our house was built sometime in the '70s and that lately, every time we identify/solve an issue, another rears its ugly head?
