Durandal's battleroids
Mar. 15th, 2019 12:17 amSome musing on what kind of relationships Durandal would have with the ten second-gen battleroids in Inmortalitas in timelines where someone besides Vince followed him.
Vince and June: listed together because they're the ones I've written/drawn the most about. Durandal loves them both dearly, and their kind natures helped him shed some of his own accumulated roughness and gradually become closer to the gentle AI he used to be.
Enzo: Well, in regular Inm., she's hunting him down for purposes of revenge...If she were the one Durandal picked, the anger and resentment would still be there, and unless she eventually learned to let go, things would probably be closer to the adversarial (or at least chilly) relationship Durandal and the SO were sort of automatically assumed to have back in the day.
Marcus: Probably about the same as whatever was implied between them in Eternal (odd friends at the very least, I think).
Hathor: Maybe if Forrest ever sees this he can elaborate, but I think it'd be kinda funny if Hathor (basically the battleroid leader/security chief, per Forrest) treated Durandal like her subordinate when he'd prefer it the other way around. (And if he ever gets snippy, she can just pick him up)
Kurt: I can only see this ending the way Rubicon's Tycho Plank did. Kurt's extreme distrust of everyone but his fellow battleroids would make it damn near impossible for Durandal to communicate with him effectively, leading to shit like "you definitely swiped the data for Achilles for nefarious ends and I will hear no objections".
Isabel: Well, she's the only member of this group who thinks freaky body mods are totally awesome, so Durandal gets to hear a lot of transhumanist debate. Also she'd really enjoy outpacing him in the gym (up to a point).
Connor: Their relationship would be a romantic one like with Vince or June, with added "Jesus Christ I opened everyone up and stuck those neural implants in" (because MIDA forced Connor to at gunpoint). Connor might also try a little longer to train Durandal for combat.
Cyrille: She'd probably stick around at first because this setup allows her to live comfortably and control who she interacts with (Cyrille not being a people person). Over time she and Durandal might grow more fond of each other, though I don't see this being anything but platonic. Durandal will always be kinda worried about the plants she brings home, though.
Janis: I see him and Durandal as forming a more brotherly bond (as opposed to regular-platonic). Maybe some of it would stem from Janis being more willing to let Durandal into combat; Janis is the only second-gen battleroid with a proper military background and it would take a lot more than one lost fight to scare him out of that (not to imply that Vince's fear of Durandal getting hurt is invalid). I think the biggest complication would be Durandal trying to figure out why Janis is so fascinated by that asshole headhunter woman who tried to murder him in their first encounter.
