So now that Kingdom Hearts III is finally out (no spoilers, BTW), I have to wonder: between the KH series and Halo, which has the more comically-obsolete old fan theories?

AFAIK, there's no "Kingdom Hearts Story Page" like there is for Halo that neatly collects past speculation, and unfortunately I haven't followed KH in a while, but I can remember stuff like "Kairi is the daughter of Ansem, Seeker of Darkness", "Blond-Haired Kid", the guesses at what was going on in the Final Mix bonus cutscene and later the trials/tribulations of Terra, Aqua, and Ven, and attempts at filling out the rest of Organization XIII. Also, one fan translation of CoM that rendered "Larxene" as "Roxine".

I feel like, just given the huge delays between main games and the general slapped-together weirdness of the worldbuilding, KH is going to take that cake. XD But Halo can probably give it a decent run.

That is true. XD (Man, if there was a KH Story Page like for Marathon and Halo, I'll bet it would be twice as dense as both of those put together...)

If we're talking about the date of release, then Halo definitely has the oldest fan theories with the Cortana letters. That was a hell of a tease Bungie!

As for Kingdom Hearts when it came out in 2002, everyone went crazy for the ending scene. The one you had to 100% for.

Who was the blond hair kid that was looking for Sora? Why was Riku blindfolded? What was that city? And why was Kingdom Hearts opening again over that city despite us closing it at the end of the first game? Why did the Heartless look so badass? What were those comets in the sky that Kairi was looking at?

Sadly all those theories were posted on personal blogs and livejournal accounts that are deleted or lost to time. Still it was fun debating with everyone at the time. The Kingdom Hearts community were so disorganized back then! Still are thanks to all the craziness of the other games! ^_^

Still, Halo takes the cake when it comes to age!

Ah yeah, Halo does have the slight advantage of age over KH. XD

Maybe one of these days I should go LJ-diving? I do remember a couple of KH comms that were so old that now-obsolete speculation cropped up. (Though two of the big ones I lurked on were sporking/fic rant comms that both almost certainly got people harassed, so I'm not super-inclined to check those again...)
